Exención impositiva para E-readers y libros electrónicos en Brasil

PublishNews Brazil

Last week, the Education, Culture and Sports Committee of the Brazilian Senate approved a bill that will exempt e-books and e-readers from federal taxes. Electronic devices, particularly imported ones, are highly taxed, resulting in high consumer prices.

Books in Brazil are already tax free under the Constitution. One problem is that the definition of “book” in the Constitution does not cover its digital formats. Senator Acir Gurgacz, who is responsible for the proposal, says the change “could cheapen these items by 60%,” said the Senator.

Only dedicated e-readers — not tablets — will be exempted from taxes. The bill moves on now to be voted on the Senate plenary.
